Wesfarmers Insurance has contracted leading carbon forest sink developer Carbon Conscious Ltd to offset the company’s 2010 corporate emissions.
The deal involves Carbon Conscious planting 26,000 Mallee eucalypt trees on marginal Western Australian farm land to assist with rural environmental issues of salinity and soil erosion. In addition, Carbon Conscious has retired Voluntary Carbon Standard (VCS) units from beneficial regional renewable energy projects on behalf of Wesfarmers Insurance.
The Wesfarmers Insurance deal follows major deals announced in 2009 with Origin Energy and BP Singapore worth $189 million and $2.5 million respectively.
Trees will be established in a permanent manner, will store carbon over a 30-year period and will be maintained by Carbon Conscious Ltd through their Carbon Capture ProgramTM. The trees are native to Australia and will help reduce salinity and wind erosion on farms whilst contributing to the fight against climate change.
16 July 2009: Carbon Conscious Limited (ASX code: CCF) and Origin Energy Limited (ASX code: ORG) have successfully completed due diligence and signed contracts for what the parties believe will be the largest carbon bio sequestration project in Australia to date, if fully exercised. The contract involves Origin paying Carbon Conscious to plant millions of native Mallee Eucalypt trees on less viable agricultural land in the wheatbelt regions of Australia for the production of Carbon Permits tradable under the Commonwealth Government’s Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme (CPRS).

HRV Supports Earth Hour
Harness Racing Victoria (HRV) offset elements of the CO2 emissions likely to eventuate during the Saturday 28 March race meeting at Moonee Valley. HRV has worked with Carbon Conscious Ltd to determine the approximate carbon emissions likely to eventuate from the lights used for racing and will plant sufficient Mallee Eucalypt trees in the Australian wheatbelt to offset elements of the meeting's carbon emissions.
